How Do Car Hoods Commonly Get Damaged?

External forces can damage a car hood in a variety of ways. One common cause of damage involves objects such as hail, tree branches, or other debris that impact the hood. Hailstones may leave rounded dents, while large or heavy branches can bend or crumple the hood contours.

Hail-related dents may amount to nothing more than regrettable eyesores. However, if those dents include damage to the clear coat and pigmented paint layers, oxygen and moisture may corrode the metal beneath, weakening the hood. You may also suffer from a seriously reduced resale value when the time comes to sell your vehicle.

Collisions also cause damage to car hoods. Your hood may wrinkle or crumple to the point that it no longer opens or closes correctly. That latch of the hood may also sustain direct damage that renders it useless.

Even ordinary wear and tear can take its toll on your car hood. Years of repeated use can cause the latch to break or the secondary hood release to quit working properly. Your hood assembly's cable may also give out over time. Old hinges can eventually fail, potentially causing your hood to pop up unexpectedly.

Why Might a Damaged Hood Cause Mechanical Problems?

A hood that gets seriously bent or crumpled may squash or rub against engine components. Depending on the components involved, this pressure or friction could impair proper engine performance. Large gaps that expose the engine bay to the elements may promote rust and subject rubber components to damaging UV rays.

Why Does a Malfunctioning Hood Pose a Safety Risk?

If you can't trust your hood to permit clear visibility, you place yourself at risk for accidents. For instance, a crumpled hood that partially blocks your field of vision might keep you from seeing obstacles in the road. You may also struggle to read traffic signs at a distance, causing you to miss important warnings.

A hood that pops up unexpectedly presents obvious dangers. Even if your hood seems securely fastened, you should have any suspicious changes in the latch's function or appearance checked as soon as possible to prevent this unpleasant surprise from occurring.

Your hood counts as one of the crumple zones built into your car to absorb collision forces. If an impact damaged the hood, it may also have damaged the frame. A damaged frame may affect your car's suspension and alignment. It may also fail to protect you the next time you get into an accident.

A skilled, well-equipped auto body repair team can remove many dents quickly and easily. These technicians can also replace hood components such as hinges, latches, and cables.

If your car hood has sustained so much damage that it has lost some of its impact protection, your auto body technician will recommend that you replace the hood instead of trying to fix it. the technicians can remove the damaged hood and install a stronger, safer replacement.

           Dent Removal

Collisions with other cars or objects or neglectful drivers and pedestrians can cause dents. These dents can significantly affect the exterior of your vehicle and even ruin the paint job.

Dents in your doors or body panels can cause expensive paint damage. Some dent repair jobs involve repainting the affected area. Other dents can be removed without repainting your car. Make sure you take your car in for dent repairs in order to avoid rust or corrosion and to maintain the functionality of your car in areas like the hood, trunk, and door.

           Paint Jobs

Another common auto maintenance procedure is a paint job. The two common signs that your car needs a paint job are fading and scratching. When your vehicle starts to fade, the clear coat starts to break down. This happens when the paint begins to thin and lose its brilliance. When you notice fading, take your car in for a fresh paint job to restore the appeal of your car.

Another common reason to go for a paint job is when you notice scratches on your car. Minor scratches can occur when you wash your car with the wrong cleaning supplies, another car comes in close contact with yours and scrapes the side, you drive too close to objects like tree branches, or negligent pedestrians scratch your car's exterior by rubbing against it. Surface scratching can be easily fixed by a paint correction.

Deep scratches can arise after an accident. If left untreated, these scratches can lead to oxidation, which can eventually result in rusting. If a scratch cuts into the paint, it can be difficult to repair. Make sure you consult your auto mechanic for a paint job before it leads to expensive repairs.

           Tire Repairs

The most common repairs for a flat tire are plugging and patching, or a combination of both approaches. When plugging a flat tire, a piece of leather coated with a rubber adhesive is pushed into the hole. The adhesive then forms a permanent seal. This repair job is performed without removing the tire.

For tires with irregularly shaped holes, the best type of repair is patching. A tire patch is glued inside the tire. The adhesive forms a seal while you're driving. With patching, the mechanic will have to remove the tire. Many technicians recommend a combination repair as the best way to repair a punctured tire.

Spark plugs are essential for a well-operating engine. These plugs endure automotive extremes. However, over time, spark plugs wear out due to high temperatures and the number of times they're tapped to help activate the engine.

Moisture trapped inside the cabin of a vehicle can create numerous hassles for its owner and passengers. In addition to the obvious discomfort of trying to see through fogged glass, a damp interior can also allow mold and mildew to flourish, prompting allergic reactions and other respiratory distress.

If you notice significant dampness inside your vehicle, you'll want to get to the bottom of that mysterious water infiltration and make any necessary fixes to prevent more water from seeping in. Watch out for the following four issues that commonly cause a soggy cabin.

           1. Worn-Out Weatherstripping

You may have noticed that the edges of your car windows feature rubberized weatherstripping similar to what you might find around a residential window or door. Manufacturers add this strip of material to form a tight yet flexible seal around gaps that might otherwise let moisture into the car.

This weatherstripping can naturally come loose or deteriorate after years of ordinary wear and tear. If you live in a climate with extreme weather or temperature conditions, this wear may occur especially rapidly. However, any older car probably needs new weatherstripping around its windows.

You can spot a weatherstripping problem fairly easily. The weatherstripping may appear flattened or crumbly, or a section of it may have detached from its surroundings. You may have the option of replacing this worn-out part with the original factory product or a generic aftermarket product, depending on your technician's recommendations.

           2. Damaged or Faulty Windshield Seals

Modern car windshields don't rely on rubber weatherstripping to seal them against the elements. Instead, a urethane cement effectively fuses the windshield glass onto the frame. In theory, a windshield properly installed in this manner shouldn't spring a leak. However, such leaks can and do occur nevertheless.

Sometimes the fault lies in a tiny, unnoticed skip in the urethane's seal during the assembly process. If you replaced your windshield with someone lacking the proper skills, tools, and training, a less-than-precise application of urethane may have left a pinhole leak. Your body technician can often seal these leaks.

           3. Malfunctioning Sunroof Drains

Sunroofs naturally collect rainwater around their perimeters. Manufacturers build a set of drains into the sunroof, one at each corner, to catch and redirect this moisture. The attached drain tubes carry the water safely away to exit points located near the rocker panels.

Unfortunately, it doesn't take much to make this drainage system malfunction. The small drain holes can get clogged, forcing water to accumulate around the sunroof and eventually drip into the vehicle. The drainage tubes can also disconnect, spilling water into the cabin instead of expelling it from the vehicle.

Your auto technician can remove a clog from a sunroof drain by snaking a wire into the drain or blowing compressed air into it. A drainage tube that has developed a leak or keeps disconnecting may need replacement.

           4. Leaky Air Conditioning Components

Sometimes, your own car can saturate its cabin with water. If your driver's footwell feels soggy, you may have developed a problem with your air conditioning evaporator drain hose. This hose normally receives the condensation from your air conditioner's operation and reroutes it to drip on the ground.

This drain hose can clog due to constant or repeated exposure to everyday road debris, from dust and gravel to twigs and leaves. Once it thoroughly stops up, the evaporator gets wetter and wetter with accumulated condensation. This extra water eventually finds its way into your cabin.

Your auto technician can clean out a clogged evaporator drain tube. Get this problem fixed before the moisture has a chance to damage your cabin upholstery or infest your interior with mold spores.

If you have recently purchased a fiberglass-body RV, or you plan to do so in the future, you should understand what problems this material can develop, as well as how to combat or even prevent them. Discover three common RV fiberglass problems to watch out for.

           1. Gel Coat Oxidation

Fiberglass RV panels receive an outer layer of a substance known as a gel coat. This liquid resin forms a hard protective polymer once it goes through a curing process, protecting the fiberglass underneath from weather damage and abrasions. Unfortunately, the gel coat can suffer its own hardships, notably oxidation.

Oxidation occurs when oxygen or ultraviolet (UV) radiation reacts with other substances, such as the reddish discoloration and metal damage associated with rust. Over time, exposure to wind, moisture, and UV rays can dull the finish and fade the color of the RV fiberglass gel coat.

You can minimize gel coat oxidation simply by garaging your RV or covering it with a form-fitting tarp between road trips. Some gel coat oxidation responds to rubbing or buffing, but severe cases may require a time-consuming wet sanding process. Eroded fiberglass may need recoating or repainting.

           2. Delamination

If the normally smooth sides of your fiberglass RV take on a puffy, dented, or wavy appearance, then the outer layer of fiberglass may have separated from the underlying structures. Auto body technicians refer to this problem as delamination.

A typical fiberglass RV body panel includes three layers of materials, with fiberglass interior and exterior layers sandwiching an inner section composed of Styrofoam and wood. If these layers pull away from each other for any reason, air and water may collect between them, encouraging deformation and ever-worsening damage.

Check and reseal the seams on your RV's fiberglass body periodically to prevent air and moisture from invading. This preventative maintenance can spare you a lot of trouble and expense later. If you see obvious problem areas or hear a hollow sound when you tape on them, you need to schedule repairs.

Prior to re-laminating your RV's body panels, your auto body technician will need to pull the outer layer off to check for water. Trapped moisture can foster mold growth, potentially causing health problems for your occupants even as the water destroys the panels' structural integrity.

           3. Thermal Checking

UV rays can do more than just dull the finish on your fiberglass RV's gel coat; they can also cause a problem known as thermal checking. In thermal checking, extensive UV exposure can penetrate the gel coat to break down the fiberglass itself, causing cracks to form.

Early stage thermal checking may only create unsightly cosmetic disfigurement in the fiberglass. However, if the cracks go all the way through the outer fiberglass layer, they can let moisture into the wood and Styrofoam middle layers. This breach can lead to delamination unless you fix it as soon as possible.

The least invasive fix for thermal checking involves removing and reglazing only the damaged parts of the fiberglass. Your auto body technician may recommend this approach over a full fiberglass layer replacement (which can damage the middle layers of the structure), depending on the severity of the problem.

Trust your RV's exterior to Cambron Body Shop for everything from regular maintenance and cleanings to extensive fiberglass repair or replacement.

A driver counts on a car's ability to respond to steering instructions as accurately and predictably as possible. Before you take this performance for granted, however, you should realize that alignment errors among your wheels can affect your driving precision, the life of your tires, and your safety on the road.

You can benefit from some basic grounding on what goes into an automotive wheel alignment, what kinds of problems may develop (and why), and how you can stay on top of these problems to ensure safer, more enjoyable travels. Check out the answers to the following frequently asked questions on this subject.

Why Do Wheels Lose Their Alignment?

Many alignment problems occur when the wheels bump up against a stationary obstacle of some sort. If you jump a curb, slam into a pothole, or drive over a speed bump at an ill-advised speed, the impact against the wheels can push them out of their optimal alignment.

Even if you take care to avoid obstacles, you may still develop an alignment error over time. Wear and tear on springs, tires, and shock absorbers can introduce slippages in the precision among these interacting parts. Uneven air pressure in your tires may also encourage the development of alignment problems.
Wheels may go out of alignment in a few different directions. For example, the leading edges of your front or rear wheels may point away from each other, a condition known as toe-out. They may also suffer from the opposite problem, an inward-facing misalignment known as toe-in.

Sometimes a car's wheels may lose their vertical alignment with the body of the car, a measure referred to as camber. In a wheel that suffers from negative camber, for example, the top of the wheel may point inward toward the car, with the part of the wheel that touches the road assuming an outward slant.

Your car's wheels may develop a problem regarding their castor, the degree at which they line up with the steering pivot that connects them to the rest of the suspension system. A correct caster requires a completely straight vertical angle, with deviations referred to as positive or negative angles in relation to zero degrees.

How Can You Recognize a Potential Alignment Problem?

Alignment problems can call attention to themselves in a variety of ways. Most obviously, you may feel your steering wheel resisting your efforts to knee the car moving in a straight line. If you take your hands off the wheel, the nose of the car may pull to one side of the road or the other.

Abnormal tire wear offers another telltale misalignment symptom. Toe-in and negative camber problems typically cause the inner edge of the tread to wear prematurely; toe-out and positive camber will cause the outer edge to wear out or display a wear pattern known as feathering.

How Do Auto Technicians Evaluate and Correct Wheel Alignment?

Bear in mind that subtle yet significant alignment problems may not provide you with any clear symptoms at all. Periodic alignment checks can detect these problems before your tires or other suspension components experience unnecessary wear and damage that might otherwise require their replacement.

Alignment technicians use a specialized alignment machine to measure toe, camber, and caster. They also measure thrust, the alignment between the front wheels and the rear wheels. If a problem exists, the technicians adjust the suspension angles that need correction. You might need a two-wheel, four-wheel, or thrust alignment.

What Can You Do to Minimize Future Alignment Issues?

While you can't do much about the effects of time and repeated driving on your car's alignment, you can take steps to minimize other causes of alignment issues. For starters, try to distribute the weight of the car as evenly as possible. Position cargo toward the center of the vehicle, and keep your tires properly inflated.

Vigilant, careful driving can also make a difference. Maintain low speeds on rough terrain or over speed bumps, watching out for curbs and potholes.

If your late-model car, truck, minivan, or SUV boasts a lightweight build, superior fuel economy, and greater crash safety than its predecessors from previous generations, you most likely have an aluminum vehicle. Aluminum offers some remarkable benefits, but it also poses challenges for body shops.

Fortunately, you can still have those dings, dents, crumples, and other issues repaired with the same success that you might expect for a steel-based vehicle. Here are some key points to understand about body repair work for aluminum cars.

           Aluminum Vehicles Have Become Commonplace

Aluminum has grown increasingly common and popular as a principal construction material for vehicles over the past

, currently holding a close second place against the longtime favorite, steel. The relatively light weight of this metal allows automakers to build more fuel-efficient, eco-friendly vehicles.

Aluminum also offers some important safety advantages over steel. A pound of aluminum can absorb twice as much crash energy as the equivalent pound of steel. This quality allows automakers to design cars with larger crumple zones, which provides greater safety for occupants while still maintaining a light weight.

In recent years, aluminum automaking took a giant leap forward when Ford decided to use this metal for the manufacture of its most popular model, the F-150 pickup truck. As a result, a larger number of drivers than ever now own aluminum-based vehicles, with the trend showing every sign of continuing.

Aluminum Calls for Special Tools and Techniques

For all aluminum's advantages as an automotive material, the increasing popularity and prevalence of aluminum vehicles have created some fresh challenges for owners who need to get body damage repaired. Aluminum behaves very differently from steel, meaning that it requires different repair tools and techniques.

For instance, steel responds well to traditional high-heat welding methods. By contrast, the relatively thin sheet metal used in aluminum body panels can easily overheat and cause the metal to decay. Instead of welding aluminum body panels, technicians may need to attach the panels with rivets and adhesives.

Smoothing out a wrinkled or dented aluminum body panel also presents some special challenges. While body shop technicians can hammer or stretch a steel panel back into its previous contours, aluminum requires the use of controlled heat, the manipulation of pins attached to the panels, or even the total replacement of a panel.

Don't assume that every auto body shop can work on aluminum cars. Shops must invest in not only the correct tools and materials but also in the training and education necessary to repair aluminum bodies successfully. Unfortunately, only

Before aluminum vehicles hit the marketplace in droves, body shops found them more time-intensive and labor-intensive to repair than their steel counterparts. Even though aluminum car bodywork requires different kinds of training and equipment, however, these differences don't necessarily cost you more.

The gap between aluminum and steel repair costs has traditionally come down to insufficient tools, skills, and training. An auto shop with the proper experience and certification can usually perform a body repair on an aluminum vehicle in about the same amount of labor time as a steel repair might take.

Hail damage doesn't just ruin your car's looks; it can also compromise your body integrity and vehicle resale value if you let it go unaddressed. Here are some important considerations to keep in mind about vehicular hail damage.

Kentucky can experience a variety of unpredictable spring storms which produce thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hail. As recently as March 3rd, 2020,

You can prepare against these onslaughts (to some degree) by purchasing comprehensive insurance that includes hail damage coverage, parking your car in your home's garage whenever possible, and using covered parking at your apartment or workplace.

Hail Can Do More Damage Than You Think

Hail does more than just cosmetic damage to cars. Before you decide to tolerate a few dents in your vehicle, consider that those points of damage may have penetrated the paint job. Once moisture gets past this protective barrier, it can promote rust. You can prevent this issue by scheduling the necessary body work.

When you inspect your hail-damaged car, check the glass carefully. Even if your windows still appear intact, tiny chips or hairline cracks may have formed. You should get these problems mended, or even replace the glass if necessary, to ensure that your glass remains strong and moisture-resistant.

Don't forget that hail damage to your car may bother prospective buyers more than it bothers you. If you decide to sell the car at some point, you'll command significantly higher asking prices if the car displays an undamaged body, undamaged glass, and an intact paint job.

Hail Damage Repair Requires the Right Tools and Techniques

Resist the temptation to remove your car's hail-related dents yourself. Home remedies such as the use of suction cups or heat may do more harm than good, leaving you with an even more challenging repair puzzle. Save yourself time, effort, and frustration by seeking help from professional body shop technicians.

Even in the world of professional auto body repair, it pays to understand how the professionals correct hail damage. The repair method your car receives will depend both on the extent of the damage and the techniques and training of the technicians.

The simplest technique for correcting auto body dents involves the use of filler material. The technician adds the smallest useful amount of filler to the dent and then smooths it out until it matches the body panel contours as closely as possible. A fresh paint job then helps to hide any difference in color or consistency.

Under the right circumstances, trained technicians may use a technique known as paintless dent repair, which removes dents without adding filler or repainting the vehicle. In this method, sophisticated tools and careful procedures enable the technicians to push or pull at the metal until they achieve a smooth contour.

Not all hail-damaged cars can benefit from the paintless dent repair technique. For instance, paintless dent repair will not work on stretched paint or the deepest dents. In these cases, you may get better results from the fill-and-repaint technique.

Find out what degree of hail damage you've actually sustained, ask about the wisest approach to repairs, and then get the skilled professional help you need to restore your car's pristine looks.

When you think about having body repair done on a vehicle, you might think about standard auto body repair. However, if your semi-truck has body damage, you should do something about that damage, too. Here are a few reasons why semi-truck body repair is not something that you should skip, even if your truck is still in fully operable condition.

           1. Your Truck's Appearance Matters

Because of the heavy-duty use that you might put your semi-truck through, you might not think that appearance matters too much. However, appearance does matter when you are driving a commercial truck.

If you are an owner-operator, you will probably find that current and potential clients will take you more seriously if you have a clean, nice-looking truck. If you own a trucking company, then you should be aware that your company's reputation could actually be impacted by the appearance of the trucks in your fleet.

If your trucks have visible dents, dings, cracks or other imperfections, you should look into semi-truck body repair. If your trucks have faded paint, it might be time to look into a new paint job. Additionally, you should keep your trucks clean and replace any faded or damaged decals or truck wraps when needed.

           2. Your Truck Might Be More Prone to Issues

Even if the body damage on your semi-truck does not appear to be too serious right now, you should know that even minor body damage can cause your truck to be more at risk of certain issues. A damaged hood may not protect the truck's mechanical components properly, for example. Also, even minor dents and scratches can cause rust, which can slowly cause your semi-truck's body to degrade.

           3. Your Truck's Value Could Be Impacted

It is no secret that semi-trucks are expensive pieces of equipment. Not only do you want your semi-truck to hold up well in the long run, but you probably want to maintain its value as well. After all, you could plan to sell or trade it in later, and you probably want to get as much money for it as possible.

If your semi-truck has body damage, then you can expect that damage to impact the overall value of the truck. Even if this concern does not seem like a big deal right now, it can impact you when you're ready o trade your semi-truck in for a new truck. Addressing the issue now can help you maintain and improve your truck's value ahead of time.

Of course, in addition to having the truck repaired, you should also have it repaired well. If dents aren't repaired properly or if the paint job doesn't look good, then you can expect these matters to impact your truck's value, too.

           4. Your Truck Might Not Pass Inspection

As you probably know, in order to operate your semi-truck on the road, you have to ensure that it will pass various types of inspections. Not only do you have to ensure that your truck is in good mechanical condition so that it can pass these inspections, but also you should be aware that its exterior condition may be looked at, too.

For example, if there is a risk that a damaged grille or bumper will fall off while you or one of your drivers operates the truck, the truck might not pass inspection. Rust, which can be caused by body damage, could also cause your truck to fail inspection.

If your semi-truck has body damage, address the situation promptly. Luckily, there are body repair professionals out there who can help.

PREVENT AUTO BODY RUST

Whether the rust on your car is caused by body damage or just general wear and tear, you need to address the rust before it causes major damages.

Rust isn't just unsightly on a vehicle, it can lead to major structural damages over time. Rust is a byproduct of a chemical reaction that actually causes the metal to dissolve, so rust will literally eat holes in your vehicle if given enough time.

Whether the rust on your car is caused by body damage or just general wear and tear, you need to address the rust before it causes major damages.

           Paint Damages

Paint damages can range from a small scratch that barely reveals the metal to a large scrape. Oxidation is another issue that sometimes causes paint to flake off prematurely, exposing the metal car panels beneath.

           Issues

The paint on your car is protected by a clear coat, If the clear coat is scratched but the paint remains, your car is likely safe from rust. If the scratch penetrates through both paint and clear coat, then rust becomes a concern. Scratches tend to rust quickly due to their sunken nature that allows them to collect and hold moisture droplets easily.

The damage may not be limited to the scratch, either. As the rust spreads, it can get under the paint and create even more extensive damages.

Scratch repair, as soon as you notice the damage, can prevent rust from ever forming. Most scratches can be repaired simply by cleaning the area, sanding the scratch smooth, then filling it in with new paint and a clear coat.

If rust has already begun to form in the scratch, more extensive sanding and buffing to remove it may be necessary before the paint repair can be completed.

           Creased Dents

Creased dents can be small, such as the type you find on a side panel when someone hits your car with their door. They can also be large, such as the dents created when a car side swipes you during a car accident.

           Issues

Smooth dents don't usually have paint issues and they can easily pop out, so they aren't a concern when it comes to rust. The dent to worry about is the one that has a crease in the center. Not only does the crease make it hard to simply pop out the dent, paint is often missing or weakened inside the crease. Over time, the pain will loosen further and moisture will creep in, eventually resulting in rust.

Sometimes the metal is actually broken inside the crease. The break can let moisture through to the backside of a panel, which may have no rust treatment and be even more prone to rusting.

Dent repair is a possibility if the metal hasn't broken inside the crease. The repair technician will use a dent removal tool to pop out the dent as much as possible. Minor creased can be slowly knocked out using the same tool, where more severe creases may require the use of a mallet to smooth.

Once the dent is smooth again, the repair is as simple as sanding the area and repainting.

           Exposed Metal

Exposed metal is sometimes the result of an accident, but it can also just be an issue with coatings or paint fading over time. Sun damage can cause paint to oxidize and peel off, or age may cause underbody coatings to wear off until metal frame components are exposed.

           Issues

Exposed metal on body panels is unattractive, but most rust damage is superficial. Rusted body panels may also bring down the car value.

The main concern is if the underbody and frame metal has begun to rust, as this can actually affect the operation of the car. Rusted frames are weakened, which can lead to more extensive damages or even injuries in the event of an accident.

           Repair Options

Body panel damage requires either panel replacement or sanding and repainting. If holes have formed, replacing the panel is the best option.

Rust on the underbody and frame may require a combination of rust removal and component replacement. Once this is done, apply an underbody sealant to prevent future rust problems.

A new paint job is a great way to revitalize your vehicle. However, a paint job is also a big project that requires careful planning. To get the most out of your paint job, you need to carefully consider all relevant factors. Here are seven factors to think about regarding your new paint job.

           1. The Timeline

Your vehicle is probably going to have to be in the shop for at least a few days or as long as a couple weeks to have a paint job done. You, therefore, want to schedule your paint job properly.

Most of us need our vehicles on a daily basis. Either schedule your paint job for a time when you won't need a vehicle or arrange to rent a vehicle while your vehicle is in the shop.

           2. The Price

When you have a paint job done, you need to invest in quality. An inexpensive paint job might cost you down the road when your paint gets scratched and fades more easily down the road.

According to Angie's List, a full paint job should cost about $2,000. However, the highest quality paint jobs for those wishing to raise their vehicle body to auto show standards could rise as high as $7,500.

           3. The Color

If you want to really change the look of your vehicle, you might want to consider having it painted a different color. However, one thing to be aware of if you want to change your paint color is that completely changing a vehicle's body color is often more expensive than repainting the body the same color.

Evaluate your options regarding color and decide what's right for you. Remember that if you're growing tired of your vehicle and need a change, having it painted a different color is usually a much less expensive option than purchasing an entirely new vehicle.

           4. The Goals of the New Paint Job

Vehicle owners get their car painted for a variety of reasons. If you are simply having repairs done after body damage, the most basic paint job available might be acceptable for you.

However, you want to pay for a higher quality paint job if you're into full auto detailing or you'll be showing your vehicle at auto shows. Consider what your goals are when determining whether various options are appropriate for you and your vehicle.

           5. The Added Resale Value

A new paint job can significantly increase the resale value of a vehicle. If a vehicle's body has significant scratches and dents, a new paint job leaves the vehicle looking new again. A newer looking vehicle is worth more as a trade-in or to a prospective used car buyer.

If you are looking to sell your vehicle in the near future, a new paint job gives your vehicle an immediate boost in value and puts more money into your pocket once you sell.

           6. The Need to Empty Your Interior

One thing that motorists are often unaware of before they have a paint job done is that painting an auto body requires the interior to be empty. Therefore, you'll have to be ready to empty your vehicle out completely before the shop can prep it for painting.

Not only will you need to empty all your own items out of your vehicle before the paint job, but the auto body shop will also need to remove interior fixtures like the console, dashboard, and seats. Make sure you're ready to clear out your vehicle interior before you have your paint job scheduled.

           7. The Prevention of Rust

A lot of vehicle owners get a new paint job because their car is scratched and susceptible to rust. If you're having a vehicle painted that has significant rust damage already, you should have rust treated before the paint is applied.

Have your auto body shop clean off rust as much as possible and apply a primer that inhibits rust growth to make your new paint job as effective as possible against rust development in the future.

STEPS TO TAKE IF YOUR RV IS IN AN ACCIDENT

If you own any motor vehicle, you know accidents can happen. Learn a few essential steps you should take if you are ever in an accident in your RV.

Accidents do happen. If you own any motor vehicle, you know that this is always a possibility, no matter how safely you drive. And when you drive a large recreational vehicle, you face both normal chances of being in an accident as well as special circumstances unique to your RV. The best way to handle all these risks is to understand what to do if there is an accident.

So as you head out on the road in your RV, here are a few reminders if you experience a road accident.

           Put Safety First

As with any car or truck accident, the safety of all passengers is the most important thing to see to first. Check your own health condition and help ensure that everyone in your motor home is also safe. If you aren't sure about anyone's condition, call emergency services right away.

When the RV is in motion, both drivers and passengers should wear seat belts. But because of the open layout of motor homes, passengers may also have the tendency to get up and move around while on the road. If your RV is hit while stationary, people are likely to be moving around unsecured. This makes accidents even more dangerous, so don't take chances in the aftermath.

           Move the Vehicle When Possible

Once you know everyone is safe or is receiving medical treatment, consider whether or not you can move the RV off the road. RVs are bulky vehicles, so they take up a lot of space. If you're on a smaller back road, this might even completely close the road.

If the damage seems minimal - largely body damage, for instance - you may be able to start the vehicle and move it to the side of the road or into town. If the RV fails to start properly or may not be safe to move, call for roadside assistance that specializes in towing large vehicles.

           Notify Insurance and Police

Any time you are in an accident on the road, you should report it to the local police or sheriff's department. Even if the accident seems minor, you don't know if your RV has hidden damage that will complicate things down the line. And if anyone has sustained injuries or your vehicle is damaged, you generally must contact the police.

After notifying the police, follow standard procedures to exchange insurance information with any other drivers and obtain contact information for anyone who witnessed the accident. Take photos from all angles. Then call your insurance company as soon as possible in case you need assistance with arrangements like a rental car.

RV insurance needs are more complex than regular motor vehicles, so contact all insurance carriers that may be involved. This generally includes any separate RV policy carrier, your car or truck's insurance provider (especially when the RV is towed), and even your homeowners insurance carrier (which may cover personal belongings damaged inside the vehicles).

           Have the RV Inspected

Now that the initial work is done, you'll need to get your RV back in working condition. Look for a repair company that specializes in recreational vehicles and trailers since these have different needs than regular cars and trucks. An experienced RV repair shop will know how to find hidden damage and how to repair the special fiberglass and sheet metal involved in RV construction.

If you live by the ocean, you need to understand how salt water can affect your car. Read this blog to learn what you need to know.

People who live near the ocean have the advantage of beautiful weather, fantastic swimming opportunities, and much more. Unfortunately, these individuals may also suffer from an increased risk of rust on their cars due to the high level of saltwater in the area. So if you live near an ocean and experience rust on your car, you need to understand this problem and how to treat it.

           Saltwater Speeds Rust Spread

Rust is the result of an electrochemical process that happens very slowly and on a molecular level. Iron, on its own, will eventually rust a little, but exposure to a variety of various elements will increase this corrosion speed. For example, heavy exposure to water speeds up the molecular process and causes rust to spread even further.

While most people probably know that water increases rust spread and decay, those who live near oceans may not fully understand the increased dangers of saltwater. Salt is also a conductor that increases the speed of rust, as saltwater boosts the rate of electron movement in any liquid.

           Rust Dangers Vary

While the risk of rust is more persistent with direct vehicle exposure to saltwater, the evaporated saltwater vapors that float through the air near the ocean may also cause an increased risk of rust. This problem increases the closer you live to the sea, due to a higher concentration of saltwater.

Even worse, salt triggers other types of corrosion that water does not accelerate on its own. For example, saltwater that contacts aluminum or iron creates a kind of battery that further accelerates the speed of corrosion on your vehicle. And salt on its own has a sharp surface that can easily break apart the exterior paint of your car and increase the speed of rust.

Rust Prevention Can Help

The danger of rust on your car means that you must take high-quality rust prevention very seriously. If you see rust developing, even on small spots on your vehicle, you need to act quickly. Use spot repairs for minor instances of rust on a car or to reverse the spread of rust across the surface of a car or even a boat.

The first spot repair technique requires applying one of two types of acid: citric or acetic, both of which you apply directly to small dots or rust on your metal. Citric acid comes from lemon juice, while acetic acid is vinegar. Use these acids on your rust before it gets too severe, and you can decrease the range of its spread across your metal.

You can also spread a salt and lime mix on you rust to decrease its spread and break apart much of its buildup. Spread salt on top of the rust and then add lime juice on the salt. The lime juice stops the salt from corrosion and will, instead, break apart surface rust and make it easier to wipe or scrape away with a rag or a brush.

While DIY rust prevention may help minor cases of corrosion, more severe issues need professional help. High-quality auto body experts can pinpoint where your rust begins and will then work hard to remove corroded metal from your vehicle and keep it safe.

After your car was struck by another vehicle in an accident, you may have noticed some dents in the side but feel as though the damage was not significant. However, the frame itself may have sustained damage, even if you are unable to see it. Look for the following signs that your car's frame was bent in the accident and

           .

           1. Car No Longer Drives Straight

One sign you should look for to determine whether or not your car's frame is bent is an inability to drive straight. If the damage sustained is located on the side of your car, you may notice some difficulty while driving.

Usually, the frame keeps the front and back of your car in a straight line, which helps to keep the steering base even. However, when the frame is bent, the back and front are no longer in alignment. While you drive down the road and look in your rearview mirror, you may notice that the back of the car looks crooked.

When you try to steer the car, you may need to pull hard on the steering wheel whenever you turn it one way or the other. Then, you may have to keep a hard grip on the wheel to keep it in the direction you want.

This difficulty in steering is due to the misalignment of the steering base. If the frame is slightly bent, you may only notice some difficulty. However, if the bend is severe enough, you may have to constantly fight to keep the wheel in position. If the damage is this severe, your vehicle is not safe to drive and needs to be inspected as soon as possible.

           2. Trunk and Doors Do Not Close Properly

Even if you do not experience any difficulty while driving your car, the bend in the frame could affect your ability to open and close your trunk, hood, or doors. Since the frame creates the base outline of your car, any damage done to the base can affect the hinges and locks.

After your accident, you may notice that you have to slam your trunk or hood shut. Then, even after you hear the latch, you may notice one or two gaps between the body of the car and the sides of the trunk or hood. These gaps are the result of a twisted or bent frame near the back or front of the vehicle.

In addition, one or more of your doors may no longer latch easily. Or, even if they are closed as tightly as possible, the doors may have gaps around them. These gaps are indicative of frame damage in the center of your vehicle.

Even if you are able to fully latch your trunk, hood, or doors, the damage that creates a problem with closing them easily or creating gaps can be a serious safety issue. Just because you are able to close them now does not mean that they will stay latched in the future.

If you are driving down the road and the hood flies up, you could easily cause a serious accident. If the trunk opens, any contents inside could hit the drivers behind you. And, if your doors open while going down the road, you or one of your passengers run the risk of serious injury.

If your car's frame is bent, the damage does not necessarily mean that you can no longer drive the car. But you should bring your car to Cambron Body Shop so we can assess the extent of the damage and, if needed, use one of our frame machines to straighten the frame.

Exterior damage on a vehicle increases along with the miles it drives. It is impossible to prevent all mishaps when the vehicle is on a roadway or in a parking lot. Many owners ignore the small dents and dings and allow them to accumulate over time before they move on to their next vehicle. Here are some examples of when this is not the best idea.

           1. Plans to Sell

A shiny, scratch-free exterior draws attention from buyers much faster than a car or truck speckled with scratches and dents. Someone that wants to sell a used older vehicle quickly should look at the option of repairs if they cannot bring out the beauty of the finish with a wash and wax.

Trade-in values also vary a lot due to the exterior condition. In fact, it takes only a few scratches and dents to lower the condition of the vehicle in the eyes of a professional appraiser. Make repairs to only the most obvious damage to avoid the mistake of investing more into the work than what you can expect to recoup in the sale.

Check the trade-in and resale values of the vehicle online to see the difference between the model in poor, fair, and good condition. Use that as the guideline for how much you can afford to spend at a body shop. Get estimates on a full repair as well as for repairs for only the most damaged sections. It is sometimes worth spending a little if the goal is to sell as fast as possible.

           2. Prevent Future Damage

The most worrisome factor of exterior damage is the potential of rust. A small amount of rust on an older vehicle is not unusual, but over time the neglected spot can become worse. At some point, the rust causes vulnerabilities in the metal that may make the vehicle unsafe in an accident.

           3. Keep It Professional

Many people work in careers where their clients see their vehicle. Salespeople, insurance agents, Uber drivers, and driving instructors often use their vehicles for work every day. A dented, rusted, or otherwise damaged vehicle does not look professional and may even lead to a loss of business if clients ride in the vehicle.

This also applies to businesses that advertise on their vehicle. The shoddy appearance of a damaged car or truck could lower the reputation of the business it advertises.

The removal of dents and a fresh coat of paint restores the appearance of professionalism and is much more affordable than the cost of a new automobile.

           4. Maintain a Favorite

A favorite car is not always a luxury vehicle or a vintage hot rod. Many people feel an attachment to the first automobile they bought, or they just love the reliability and comfort of something they bought years ago. The desire to keep a vehicle on the road for as long as possible and avoid monthly payments requires exterior care.

A fresh coat of paint makes an older vehicle feel new again. The shiny finish and lack of exterior damage increases the appeal of the ride and makes it feel new. It may not make the vehicle last longer or operate more efficiently, but it can increase the pride of the owner.

           5. Assist With Insurance

Some companies will not allow full coverage on a vehicle with exterior damage. Other insurers document the damage to prevent a claim later. Drivers may encounter problems if an accident causes damage in the same area as the prior damage. The insurance company may refuse to cover all the repairs, or there are delays as the insurer makes a decision.

Whatever your business type, you probably rely on one or more trucks to get you or your employees out to a job site. Your profit line relies on the simple fact that reaching your destination is not just good for your business - this is your business. Because so much relies on those trucks, always keep those truck bodies in good repair and free from dents or damage.

Your Trucks Are Your First Impression

Much like a firm handshake when introducing yourself can make a great first impression with someone, so too can your company vehicle. A truck that appears clean, shiny, and in great physical condition makes customers feel like they made a good choice when they chose your business.

On the other hand, if your truck has visible scratches, dents, rust, or a bad paint job, your customers might wonder if they have made the wrong choice when they enlisted your business to fill their needs. A beatup vehicle can seem like a bad reflection of your business image and your integrity.

Don't let customers feel that way. You can make a great first impression with your clients by arriving at the job site or their business in well-cared-for trucks. If you care about how your fleet presents itself, this will translate to your customers. Take the time to repair dents and other body damage as soon as possible.

Possessing a business fleet provides you with the unique opportunity to advertise your business without having to pay for print, web, or media advertisements. Your fleet itself gets word of your business out on the freeways and busy streets for potential customers to find. In fact, the average delivery truck can receive

Bad advertising simply does not attract good customers. Cheap, cheesy commercials and misspelled or poorly worded flyers can make a business seem low-tech, unreliable, and incompetent. So too does a shoddy-looking fleet. If your business trucks look bad because of body damage, customers will look the other way, believing your business operates the way your trucks look.

Your Trucks Can Maintain a Higher Resale Value

While trucks are important to your business, they are also costly to own and maintain. Regular wear and tear, replacement parts like tires, oil, and gasoline can all really add up. You may not be able to control the cost of these items; however, you can control how much each vehicle is worth. This becomes important if you ever decide to sell one or more trucks in anticipation of replacing them with newer models. For this, you need a high resale value.

fleet is to keep the fleet in excellent physical condition. In addition to a regular maintenance schedule, look beyond what's under the hood - take a look at the hood itself along with the entire body. Are the body and paint free from visible damage? A truck may run perfectly but be worth less if it looks bad on the outside.

Unless you're a car enthusiast, you probably don't give a lot of thought to the paint on your vehicle. That is, until you get into a car accident and your car needs repairs. Besides getting your car repaired following an accident, maybe you've noticed the paint on your vehicle has faded over the years or there are some scratches that you want to paint over to prevent rusting.

Whatever the reason for getting your car painted, here are four processes used for automotive paint jobs.

           1. Using Color Paint Codes

If you just want touch-up paint applied to the scratches, it's important that the new paint matches the color of your vehicle as closely as possible. To match the color of your car, you'll want to find the car manufacturer's color paint code. While an auto body professional will be able to find this code, you may want to know it for yourself as well.

The color paint code can be found on certain websites. As long as you have certain information, such as the year of the vehicle, the make, and model, you can find the color paint code for your vehicle. In some instances, you may also need your car's VIN.

It's important to note that you'll only be able to find the right paint code if your vehicle has its original paint. Other places the paint code for your vehicle may be found include:

            Under the hood

Inside the driver side door jamb

            Inside the glove box

            The owner's manual

Even when the correct color code is found, auto body professionals can't always guarantee the paint will match perfectly because slight variations of color might have been used on your vehicle when it was in production. The paint may also have faded over time, especially if your car is older.

           2. Tinting

If you have found your vehicle's color paint code only to discover it's not an exact match, there are some things that an auto body professional can do to match the paint as closely as possible.

If an auto body professional has a good idea of what color paint to use on your vehicle but it isn't an exact match, they can use a technique called tinting. This process entails adding other colors to the paint to make it look more like your vehicle's original color.

Tinting involves using the three dimensions of color:

            Hue

. Every color comes from the pure spectrum of colors, known as hue, and includes red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet.

            Chroma

. This Greek word for color refers to the intensity of the color.

            Value

. This represents the lightness or darkness of a color.

By using different formulas and color guides, such as the Munsell color tree, auto body professionals can come as close as possible to an exact match.

           3. Blending

If neither the color paint code nor tinting provides an exact match, blending is another technique to try. Blending isn't something that is done to the paint; instead, auto body professionals paint the parts of the vehicle that are adjacent to the ones being repaired.

Blending is often done with quarter panels, door panels, and rear body panels. If blending is done correctly, the slight color variations of the separate panels should hardly be noticeable.

           4. Using a Spectrophotometer

A spectrophotometer device provides a technologically advanced method that is used to measure the intensity of light along with the exact hues of the paint on your vehicle. Using a spectrophotometer allows auto body professionals to use this data, in combination with the color paint code, to come up with a formula that provides the exact color.

TOWING YOUR RV: WHAT TO DO AFTER A BREAK DOWN

Breaking down in an RV is a lot different than breaking down in a car. Check out this blog to learn what you should do after a break down in your RV.

Breaking down in your RV is different from breaking down in your small car. Not only is your RV more difficult to maneuver safely, but you also can be left at a loss regarding what to do next. The most important thing is to make sure to take care of your own safety and get your RV off the road.

           Put On Your Hazards

If your RV breaks down, the first thing you need to do is put on your hazard lights. Other drivers need to see that you're stopped. You should try your best to maneuver to the shoulder of the road, but this isn't always possible. Whether you're on the side of the road or not, your hazard lights will alert other drivers that you are there.

Once your hazards are on, make sure that everyone gets off the RV safely. No one should be in a stopped RV, as the likelihood that the RV could be hit by another car is too significant. Be wary, though, as getting out of your vehicle can be dangerous if you're by the side of a busy road.

           Assess the Damage

If the damage is obvious, such as a flat tire, it probably isn't dangerous. But if you don't know why your RV has stopped, it could be something more serious, such as a leaking fuel line. Examine your vehicle to determine what has been damaged. If you see leaking fluids underneath the RV, you should immediately get as far away from the vehicle as possible.

           Mark Your Vehicle

If there isn't any sign of fuel or immediate danger, you may want to take the time to use flares or reflector triangles to further mark your car. This is especially important late at night. Reflector lights, triangles, and flares should be placed so they are visible to oncoming traffic. Your hazards will illuminate the back.

           Call the Professionals

If your RV appears to have been seriously damaged and is leaking fuel or oil, you should call the police and let them know. These damages could be a hazard. Otherwise, you can call a towing company. If a towing company is not available (not all companies operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week), the police will usually be able to help.

Some issues may be able to be fixed while you're on the road. If your RV's battery is dead, if a tire is flat, or if there's some other obvious problem, give your roadside assistance service a call. They'll be able to send out a mechanic to fix the problem while you're on the road.

If your RV has to be towed off the road, on the other hand, you may want to call around to compare different rates on towing service.

           Don't Go Back In

At this point, it's tempting for many people to go back in to secure things in the RV and make sure it's safe for transport. But this isn't safe while the RV is still on the road. Instead, let the RV get towed; you can make sure your personal effects are safe when you're at the towing lot.

           Consult With Your Insurance

After your breakdown has been properly dealt with, you may want to contact your insurance company for further information about either the availability of a rental vehicle or lodging to stay the night. If you have a full-time RV, not only will you want to hit the road again, but you may also not have a place to stay. Many insurance companies provide reimbursement for these expenses, so you can get your RV repaired with peace of mind.

An automotive accident of any kind can feel immensely frustrating, inconvenient, and even scary, especially when the collision means that your vehicle requires towing away from the scene.

If you have minor injuries or no injuries, you may find yourself waiting at the scene between the time of the accident and the arrival of a

. Even if you know the fundamentals of contacting law enforcement and your insurance company, you may not know exactly what to do during this waiting period.

In this blog, we list four important steps to take after a car accident, but before a tow to simplify the insurance claims and vehicle repairs processes.

           1. Ask About Towing Restrictions Under Your Policy

In most cases, when vehicle owners are left on the side of the road after an accident, they use the time to begin filing a claim with their insurance company. Whether you are already on the phone with a representative or you have to make a new call to get this information, you should check the towing restrictions under your policy.

Your insurer may only cover towing services from certain companies or from companies within a specific mile radius. Failure to comply with these restrictions could leave you with the bill for services that should fall under your auto insurance coverage.

If your insurance company has preferred towing providers, then the representative may send out a towing request on your behalf. Otherwise, you will need to get the information of a qualified towing company and make the call yourself.

           2. Consider Towing Services From an Auto Body Shop

When you are choosing between towing companies, you should think about the future of your car, not just your preferences in the moment. A tow truck from an impound lot may be closer and take less time to get to you, but an impound lot may also cost more in out-of-pocket storage fees.

If possible, consider working with a tow truck from a reputable auto body shop. Many of these trucks are available 24 hours a day and take your vehicle directly to the shop instead of a remote lot.

Opting for towing services from an auto body shop that's approved by your insurer may also speed up the evaluation process so you know sooner whether your car will need extensive repairs and which other steps you need to take.

           3. Get Official Documentation From the Tow Truck Operator

Trusted towing companies ensure that their clients have adequate information about the towing process. If a tow truck arrives and you don't recognize the company name as the one you or your insurer called, or the truck operator seems hesitant to give you information, the truck could be part of a scam and you should wait until the tow truck company you recognize arrives.

A reputable tow truck operator will offer you a receipt for your car and provide you with the location where your vehicle will be stored. Because accidents can be disorienting, you may want to ask for the company's address and phone number in writing so you can reference it later.

           4. Remove as Many Personal Items From Your Car as Possible

Before your vehicle is loaded onto the tow truck, remove as many personal items from it as possible. You will have the opportunity to take items out while the car is in impound, but you may have to wait for specific business hours.

Additionally, if your car is totaled, you may have a short period of time to claim your possessions before the car is hauled away.

Use these guidelines to make confident, informed decisions about how your time between an accident and your car's transportation to a local impound lot or auto body shop.

When you get in your car and start driving, you most likely do not think about getting into a collision. Even as a defensive driver, there are some situations that you cannot avoid. You may have been involved in a minor collision that did not result in injuries for any party. While it may be easy to continue with your day, you should make it a priority to visit an auto body shop.

When your car collides with another vehicle, you may not think any significant damage occurred. But you should get a full inspection and other services from body shop professionals.

           Assess the Vehicle

The first step is looking at your vehicle in thorough detail. For instance, after looking on your own, you may know that the bumper is a little scratched or cracked from the collision. While it may only look like cosmetic damage, this may not be the case. The best way to handle this situation is to cover all possibilities of damage to the car, and this is what an inspection will do.

           Replace Parts

An auto body shop will be able to tell you whether you have parts that need to be replaced. If the bumper has several large cracks, you will likely need to replace it altogether. This is when you will want to think about the value of replacing the bumper because of the part and labor costs.

For example, if you have an older vehicle with high mileage, you may not intend to own it for much longer. This may encourage you to skip the bumper replacement and focus on more serious concerns such as any engine damage from the accident.

On the other hand, if you have a newer vehicle, you should get the bumper replaced. Even if you do not own the car for many years, you will maximize sale or trade-in value by keeping the car free of damage.

           Paint the Car

In a fortunate situation, you may only have cosmetic scratches on the bumper and other parts of the car. This means you do not need to worry about replacing any of the affected parts. However, the scratches will still show up unless you cover them up. The best way to handle this problem is to have body shop professionals mix paint to match yours and then paint over the scratches.

If there are a lot of scratches, it may be worth painting the entire bumper for optimal blending. This will keep freshly painted areas from standing out alongside the older paint on the bumper.

           Check the Frame

An essential part of taking your vehicle to a body shop is to check the frame. Being in a minor accident may not have led to any injuries, but your vehicle can still sustain a lot of damage. When your car's structure is compromised, you will likely have some extensive repairs on your hands.

Finding out this information is how you will gain the most peace of mind. In an ideal situation, you will have gathered all the insurance and accident-related details after the collision. This will allow you to file a claim if you find out that the problem at hand is more severe than it looked.

When you start driving after getting into an accident, you want to pay attention to the sounds that your vehicle makes as well as if there are any changes in the way that your car handles. You will want to provide this information at a body shop to give them a head start on the diagnosis.

5 SIGNS YOU NEED TO REPLACE YOUR TRANSMISSION

Understanding the warning signs associated with a transmission that has reached the end of its life can help you contact a mechanic in a timely manner.

Your transmission is an integral part of your car, as the transmission is what allows your engine to switch gears while driving. A damaged or broken transmission can have a huge effect on the amount of control that you have over your vehicle's speed. In fact, a damaged transmission can even leave you stranded on the side of the road.

Understanding the warning signs associated with a transmission that has reached the end of its lifespan can help you contact a mechanic to have the transmission inspected and replaced before it gives out completely.

           Issues Shifting Gears

The clearest indication that something is wrong with your transmission is any sort of problem while you shift gears. Problems with gear-shifting can take many different forms but most commonly will manifest as some sort of hesitation when you switch gears.

A severely worn transmission can actually cause your transmission to shift out of gear while you drive at a constant speed. If this happens, your entire vehicle may jerk or shake. If this occurs, your transmission is likely on its last legs and should be inspected as soon as possible.

           Strange Shifting Noises

Another hard-to-miss sign of a failing transmission is a strange sound that seems to come from your engine when you shift gears. High-pitched whining and clunking can point to excessive wear on your transmission's gears and predict a future mechanical failure.

Beyond the noises, any sensation of grinding or buzzing when you shift gears can point to excessive wear on the gears as well. These sounds may come from the steering wheel or the gas and brake pedals.

           Burning Smells

Beyond strange sounds, a damaged or malfunctioning transmission can give off an unpleasant burning smell. This is caused by the moving parts in your transmission experiencing excessive friction, usually due to wear or damage, which in turn causes your transmission fluid to burn.

If you notice a burning smell within the interior of your vehicle, you should head to a mechanic straight away. Even if your transmission isn't the part of your vehicle to blame, the smell of burning chemicals is never a good sign.

           Leaking Fluid

Transmission fluid is the part of your transmission that actually generates the pressure that your transmission uses to switch gears. Leaking fluid can point to a transmission that is no longer able to function properly (or at all, if the transmission is bled dry).

In order to tell whether the fluid leaking out of your vehicle is transmission fluid, you should blot fluid up with a paper towel. Transmission fluid has a reddish or orange color, which makes it distinctive from oil and coolant.

           Discolored Fluid

Even if you don't have transmission fluid actually leaking out of your vehicle, you should inspect the color of the fluid if you notice any issues with your vehicle's transmission. Check your owner's manual to determine just where the transmission fluid reservoir is in your vehicle, and take out the dipstick to inspect the fluid.

As mentioned above, transmission fluid is usually red or orange in color. However, dark fluid points to a buildup of dirt and other contaminants, which can affect the performance of your transmission.

Further, if your transmission fluid smells burnt, you likely have a transmission that is extremely worn and that generates a great deal of heat due to friction, burning the fluid.

As you walk up to your car, you notice something. There's a scratch running from one door to the next. Actually, it's more than a scratch. Clearly someone hit your parked car while you were away. And they didn't even leave a note.

What now? You could just leave your car as is. It might seem like the scratch isn't anything major or you might think that you can live with your car's minor imperfection. And then there are all of the so-called DIY fixes you've read about online. You want to save a few dollars. So you consider fixing your car yourself.

Is it wise, or even cost-effective to fix your car's scratched paint without the help of a pro? In general, the answer to this question is no. Auto body shop professionals know more about cars, paint and application techniques than you do. And that makes the pro the expert. But, you're still tempted by the fast fixes that your see out there. Before you do more damage to your car, take a look at what won't work and why you need to hire a professional who is an expert in auto paint repairs.

           Does Toothpaste Work?

Your friend's brother's father-in-law swears by toothpaste. Not just to clean his teeth, but to remove paint scratches. And now you're wondering, "Can it really work?" Wouldn't that be a money-saver? Instead of spending hundreds of dollars at the auto body shop, you could just buy a two-dollar tube of toothpaste.

If toothpaste was a real fix that worked for everyone and every car, no one would ever visit a professional collision center for a scratch or paint repair. Toothpaste is a mild abrasive. That means it can scrub and buff out surface stains on your teeth. When it comes to your car's paint, it might slightly buff away some of the jagged edge of a scratch. But it won't remove it.

Toothpaste might help to remove very small amounts of someone else's paint from your car. But it might also remove some of your paint. And this is the opposite of what you're going for. A scratched area is missing paint and toothpaste won't fill it in. Trying this supposed painting hack may give you a minty-smelling car, but it won't remove or cover-up scratches in the paint.

           Will Any Paint Work?

You have a spray paint that kind of looks similar to that cherry red finish that your car has. It would seem convenient to just touch up that small scratch with a spritz of it, right? Probably not.

Unless you have access to the manufacturer's coatings or you're an expert in auto paint, chances are visually matching the color from a swatch on the outside of a can just won't do. The picture on the spray paint may look cherry red, but when it dries on your car, it may not have the exact same tone or sheen as the rest of the paint. This turns your scratch or scuff mark into a noticeable patch of discoloration.

Along with causing discoloration, improper painting technique can result in marks, drips or other permanent imperfections. When it comes down to it, leave the spray coating to the professionals.

           Will a Permanent Marker Work?

There's a thin scratch along your car and you've got a permanent marker to fix it with. Again, not a good idea. Just like with the spray paint (or some touch-up paints) a red isn't always a red. The same goes for other colors too.

Filling in a scratch with a marker may cover the metal mark, but it won't fix the problem. It's more likely that it will make a mess and create an even larger problem for you. Put the markers down, and let the pros fix your scratches with real auto paint.
